Musicarta's Easy Piano Style will have you 'making music in minutes!'
Sixths, like thirds, are a great off-the-shelf way of filling out the modern keyboard styles right hand. Working with familiar material (to make things a little easier!) MEPS now adds sixths to the 'One Fourth...' and 'Three Fourths and a Pair' studies.
Here are the original and with-sixths versions, so you can see the logical progression.

Rely on Musicarta for fail-safe, step-by-step syncopation exercises you'll find nowhere else. With MidiPiano (and some other media players), you can slow down and repeat exercises segments until you can see just what to do and play along for practice.
There is also a collection of sixths finger exercises designed especially for the modern keyboard styles player, so you don't have to go out and buy any additional material to make good, solid progress.

Improvisation is just composing, speeded up! Very little improvisation is completely 'out of the blue'. Mostly, improvisations are pretty similar to something you played before - a variation, in other words.
Throughout the MEPS workbook, Musicarta offers variations on what you already know, so you get used to what is effectively 'slow-motion improvising'. Your very first 'Three Fourths and a Pair' study has an E minor, six-eight variation:
Both the with-sixths studies above have variations, too. (Watch them in the videos.) With just a little bit of nerve, you'll be doodling your own variations on MEPS chord sequences and melody lines, trying a different 'melodic contour' (see the workbook), starting in a different place on the keyboard or playing in a different rhythm... - 'composing at the keyboard', in fact!
The next two modules in the MEPS workbook offer some real 'boot camp' challenges.
The 'Sixths Study - MEPS Diary 29-06-13' focuses on two-handed syncopation and advanced right hand rhythms. Here are the study itself and the syncopation drills.
With the written music in front of you, the syncopation drill offers a unique opportunity to really get to grips! It's something you'll want to come back to time and again - to be realistic, syncopation at this level can take years to master - but "A journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step!"
Sixths Riff – MEPS Diary 12-11-13' is an accompaniment riff. the challenge here is 1. to keep going, and 2. to vary the pattern - so the band and your listeneres don't fall asleep. Here's the riff.
|
If you listen carefully, you'll hear that the right hand sixths go down-and-up or up-and-down, or any combination of the two. What MEPS
Diary 12-11-13 actually gives you is an 'aerial view' of your whole song-long accompaniment. |
Here's a sketch of the first eight-bar phrase.
The whole song can be expressed in up-down sketches like this. (Listen to the performance and see if you can sketch the next eight-bar chorus in the same way.) It's a clever way of planning a performance and of scheming up enough music to fill a whole song.
Exercises and tricks-of-the-trade like these will give you the inside edge when it comes to popular styles music-making and will help you become real content creators, instead of just playing this riff by so-and-so or that riff by somebody else.

The CANON PROJECT Pachelbel’s Canon in D is perhaps the most famous chord sequence of all time, and the basis of dozens of popular hits. If you can play and understand the Canon chord sequence, there isn’t much in popular music harmony you won’t be able to figure out! Its regular structure also makes it a great springboard for improvising and composition. |
