The 'harmonic minor' is so called because it provides the three principal chords of the classical minor key.

These are:

• a minor tonic (i) chord;
  
• a minor subdominant (iv) chord; but
• a major dominant (V) chord.

This is the reason for the curious combination of minor sixth (the third of the iv chord) and the major seventh (third of the V chord).

The harmonic minor scale uses the same notes descending as ascending.

• As before, C is used as the model for building the scale.
• Building is repeated, with minor (!) variations, in every key, both hands. This may get tedious, but stick with it! Repetition is an excellent teacher! By all means, doodle while the video plods through.
