The One-octave Major Scales
C and the Sharp Keys to E
This series of four pages presents a condensed one-octave practice drill for all twelve major scales in both similar and contrary motion.
Take a moment to look at the scale fingering group information - it will help you get an 'aerial view' of scale fingering, rather than trying to remember the fingering key by key.
The twelve two-handed major scales fall into four groups:
*'2H/SFG' stands for "two-handed scale fingering group" - the
groups of two-handed scales with similar fingering.
NB: The diagram below - for reference - is for the single-handed SFGs, NOT the 2H/SFGs given above!
This practice routine uses these SPPs (Scale Practice Patterns).
SPP 1Up and down the first five notes, then up the whole octave, three times.
The previous pattern, but from the top.
|
SPP 2Up and down the first five notes twice, then up and down the octave, twice.
The previous pattern, but from the top.
|
SPP 3
Contrary motion. From the middle, the first five notes out and in twice, then the whole octave, three times.
The previous pattern, but starting from the outsides.
|
SPP 4
The completed one-octave run-through. Up and down in similar motion, then from the top. From the middle, one octave contrary motion, then ditto from the outsides. |
Use the nav below to access all twelve major keys in this series.
