Musicarta Beat & Rhythm Workbook
Syncopation and Anticipation
~ Page 4 ~
Syncopation and Anticipation (Sync and Antic) - a series within the overall Musicarta 'Beat and Rhythm Cookbook' - presents an opportunity to hone your rhythmic skills on a simple series of paired notes.
This is the fourth module in the Syncopation and Anticipation series in the umbrella Musicarta Beat and Rhythm Cookbook. Please start at the beginning of the series.
In this module, we're working on the two 'joiners' - the right and left hand runs back up to the top/start of the pattern. "First type" and "second type" are indicated in the soundtrack of this example.
Stripped back to basics, this is the Type One joiner.
But the first right hand note there is in fact anticipated (video above).
And, you will be playing a left hand long-short-long-SHORT note at the same time.
You'll get a discordant pair (yellow box).
Play the riff over and over with just the Type One joiner.
Next, the type Two joiner, which runs up in the left hand.
The above video covers also the left hand long-short-long-SHORT note.
Dumping the rhythm altogether and consciously rehearsing the 'TLR' can save you any amount of trial-and-error 'practice'(video above).
Then rehearse that rhythmically.
Now play the finished riff, with both Type One and Type Two joiners.
Now go on to Page 5 of this series.
